Steven Ray has worked throughout NZ as an actor and director over five decades. Most recently he directed the 2021 Young and Hungry National Schools Tour and appeared at Circa Theatre, (Wellington), in the play, Elling.
At The Court Theatre in Christchurch he was part of the ensemble for the award winning play, Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time and also directed, Matthew, Mark, Luke and Joanne - a commissioned work for the company as part of that season.
His performance work at The Court includes Roger Hall's You Can Always Hand Them Back (touring Southland through 2014/15), Wind in the Willows, She Loves Me, This Other Eden, Othello, King Lear, Anthony and Cleopatra, Molly Sweeney, Bedbound, Travels with my Aunt, Someone Who'll Watch Over Me, The Producers, Anything Goes, Don't Mention Casablanca and Cabaret.
At Fortune Theatre (Dunedin) he appeared in The Paradise Package by Geraldine Brophy, and Over the River into the Woods.
Other theatre credits includes, Dirty Weekends, This Other Eden, Othello, The Way of the The World, Anything Goes, Cabaret, Man of La Mancha, M.Butterfly, A Christmas Carol, The God Boy, Dracula, It’s My Party & I'll Die If I Want To, Big River, and On the Razzle and a National NZ tour of Cats.
Steven Ray's directing work includes, Pirates of Penzance, Serial Killers, The Birthday Boy, Secret Bridesmaids’ Business, Foolish Acts, Middle Age Spread, I’m Not Rappaport, Doubt, Mystery of Irma Vep, The Raft, The War Artist, Take Me Home, Mr. (Circa – Chapman Tripp winner), and most recently, the new Carl Nixon play, Matthew, Mark, Luke & Joanne for The Court Theatre, Christchurch.
Recent film and TV credits include, Utu Phikete, The Hobbit, Frames, Behind the Brush (as Gottfied Lindauer), A Bloody Christmas (Australian satire).
Currently Steven is preparing, Will Eno's Title and Deed, a solo work for presentation throughout Aotearoa, New Zealand for the 2022/23 touring season.
